[Fancine Málaga、Fantastic Film Festival of the University of Málaga]が広報ポスターなどに過去日本の軍国主義の象徴として使われた旭日旗デザインを使用して論議だ。

STATEMENT OF VICE RECTORATE OF CULTURE ABOUT FANCINE POSTER
Dear student,

The University of Malaga has organized one more year its Fantastic Film Festival, ‘Fancine’, an activity we are especially proud of. In this edition, the 28th it pays a special tribute to everything related to Asia, and especially to its cinematography: both for the quality of its industry, as for quantity, as it is one of the most consolidated and prominent production focuses on the fantastic and horror genre. That’s why the leitmotiv of this year is “Asia en las venas” (Asia through the veins). Among other activities, we will screen a selection of films from different countries, two of them from South Korea in the section related to this topic. Also, as in the last editions, we will have the “Classic Asia” section, in collaboration with CineAsia.

Every year, in Fancine Film Festival we try to explore the limits of fantasy and terror on an artistic and intellectual level, trying to create a space for dialogue and debate as befits the role of a public university. However, in this edition the poster -which as in the whole history of Fancine has a clear artistic and suggestive component- has been received in an adverse way by some members of our university community. In particular, it has been interpreted that a graphic element used could mean a veiled apology of Japanese imperialism in East Asia and of the crimes committed by the Japanese army during the Second Sino-Japanese War, the colonial occupation of Korea and World War II.

The use of this stylistic motif has stoked some understandable feelings of anger among those who feel uneasy about this evocation, and they find it unfortunate. From this ViceRectorate of Culture and Sports, we regret this fact, and as far as we could, we have rectified all digital advertising elements and much of the papers. We want to clarify that it never has been an intention to offend the communities that may feel rejected by these symbols. In particular, its use as a background in some posters is an aesthetic-artistic resource that is incorporated into a mixture of different recognizable Asian iconographies in order to allude to the central theme of this edition. Its singularity lies in the simplification of the forms by means of the serigraphic or lithographic technique, with influences of the characteristic seal of the urban artist Frank Shepard Fairey, OBEY. Ironically, and showing off the transgressive and alternative character that is the Festival’s mark, the Bad Luck cat appears as an authority figure, this time holding a book instead of the classic knife that he wore in the original Fancine logo.

As a democratic institution that seeks understanding among peoples through knowledge, we regret that this artistic work, announcer of an activity that seeks the cultural encounter and without political connotation, may have caused rejection. Of course we apologize for the possible rejection, pain or incomprehension that this misunderstanding may have caused you. We want to emphasize that it has never been the intention of this University to claim any symbol that refers to deplorable or unjust historical experiences. Thank you in any case for helping us to be more alert so that in the future these uncomfortable situations will not happen again.
